I missed you in Phuket by just a couple of days, too. We arrived on the 1st of Jan (to visit a friend who has a family there). Patong beach is really not The place to be in Phuket. Our best experiences were at the Ko Yao islands (http://wikitravel.org/en/Ko_Yao) and a boat trip to the beautiful archipelago between Ko Yao and Phuket. .. Almost like in Finland! .. sort of. Heh. I have lived in Phuket since 1999. I agree with all your complaints, BUT these are due to the fact that you stayed in Patong Beach, which is absolutely not representative of Phuket Island as a whole. Looks like the best thing was Big Buddha - not in Patong...
