i just finished reading cory doctorow‘s little brother:

it’s kind of hard for me to explain exactly my reaction to the book. i haven’t lived in the states for over 2 years now, so i’ve kind of forgotten how it can feel now with dhs, security checks, etc. and my suspicion is that things will actually get worse, largely because of the economic climate right now, before they get better. i doubt things will really get to the point in this book, but worse nonetheless. one hopes that the obama administration will be more even-keeled, but these are interesting times.

the other thing that makes it hard for me to describe exactly what i felt about the book is that there are a number of themes here that i think about regularly, and am even considering writing about. many of the things happening around us are troubling, some baffling, others profoundly sad.

nevertheless, in this book, as in the world around us, we can find hope and comfort in friends, family, and ideals. those things shouldn’t be forgotten.

thinking about the book itself, and not the meta-story or real-life parallels, i really liked the style of writing – straight-forward, first-person, easy to digest. there’s not much extra verbiage, and that lets the plot shine through instead of distracting the reader, which makes it harder to put down until you finish. :-) in a way, it was exactly the book i needed to read right now.
