i just finished reading “treason” by orson scott card.

since i’ve started writing myself, i think i have started to see books in a little different way. this was not one of my card favorites at all, but i have a lot of admiration for the book for two reasons.

  1. the amount of thought and planning that went into the backstory was pretty impressive. the whole conflict over iron and the artificial space race were clever bits that must have taken a lot of thought.
  2. the willpower to revisit something that you’ve written years or even decades earlier, and refine it and bring it back to life, is admirable. often, i have found that completing something, especially a larger written task, can be daunting. and once i finish, i’m content just to be done and send it off. going through the entire novel like that seems tough.
