i’ve been doing a bit of writing myself, and one of the things that i really wanted to do was to get more exposure to different styles of writing. so i picked up slaughterhouse five.
the style was definitely very different from what i would naturally write myself. the subject matter, world war II (at least, that may be the subject matter), is one that i find interesting enough. but i have to say, i really just didn’t ejoy this very much. i kept asking myself why i kept reading. i kept waiting for a point. funnily enough, it took me visiting the wikipedia page for slaughterhouse five to have a ‘duh’ moment. the book is against war. it seems so natural now that any book about world war II would be an anti-war book. but it reminds me of the frame of reference, and the power of context. this is a valuable lesson for me, as a lot of what i’ve been writing is time-critical. i tend to gravitate towards cyberpunk, weaving in current events and modern technology. that will always date my work (thanks to chris for pointing that out to me also!), and make it less relevant for future readers. i have some re-writing to do.
